Why

We wanted to bring the stories of migration with a funny twist on stage to have people experience, listen to them face-to-face.

Location

Fullersta Gård, Fullersta gårdsväg, Huddinge, Sweden

Characteristics

Area

Fullersta Gård is a communal art center of Huddinge at the outskirts of Stockholm. The upper floor of their intimate museum provided the backdrop for, first, the workshop, and, in between the artworks at display: the stage on which three stories were told by Morteza, Dee and Omar.

Audience

Everyone was welcome.

How the audience/participants were reached or discovered

We used a Facebook page, the network of Fullersta Gård and our own network of friends and colleagues.

How

Morteza, Dee, Jasper and Per travelled to Stockholm from Antwerp and Paris.

The workshop started with a little lecture on the why of the workshop: to focus if even briefly on needs in ourselves that are met, fulfilled.

Three stories were told live on stage. The first in Dutch with live consecutive interpreting.

The event started with an official welcome by Per Hüttner accompanied by an excerpt from EXODUS, Fabien Guillermont and the Riding the Donkey Backwards youtube movies were shown in a loop.

In general, we all enjoyed a relaxed, and profound evening. Attendees were genuinely touched by the impact of the workshops by Dolphins Inc, and how it affected – if only gently – their focus while listening to the stories afterwards. We even had the honor of welcoming a new storyteller: Omar.

How it went

Main lessons learned

We had felt it to be a good idea to combine the workshop with the live storytelling. To have these parts interact exceeded our expectations. Of course, one always wants a larger audience, does one?

Inspiration

Marshall Rosenberg’s Non-Violent Communication: A Language of Life was the main inspiration for the workshop together with the work of Robert Gonzales.

Activity Timeline

2016

  • On stage

After a little introductory speech by Per Hüttner the crowd moved upstairs to take part in a workshop, called Needs Met. The Belgian-Swedish company Dolphins Inc designed this workshop to have participants focus for a short while on needs they have. Not, like we usually do, on the needs that are not met, things that are lacking, shortcomings,… In pairs, people explored this mental/emotional tool. After the workshop, an hour or so later, we all moved to the neighboring exposition area were Dee, Morteza and Omar each told a story of migration with a funny twist. Dee and Morteza had been part of the project from the very beginning; Omar was new, and was invited by his Swedish buddy, Anders Edén Ädel. Finally, we had some more talks, and drinks, while people could watch the RtDB youtube movies in on e of the other museum rooms.
